World of Warcraft has one of the most extensive collections of recipes of any game I’ve ever played. I feel like I can make pretty much whatever I want and coincidentally find an in-game recipe to match it to. And it, like almost every other game with food in it, has provided me with a massive amount of inspiration to make things I never would have thought of before. Hot Papaya Milk is one of those inspired recipes.
It’s frustratingly difficult to get quality papayas in Washington. They’re either too soft, too pale/firm, or downright rotten. I didn’t have a whole lot more luck when I went shopping today but I did manage to find an acceptable one. I know I’m not really selling this recipe very well. I’m mainly wishing you’ll excuse the look of it (it is paler than I would prefer) and trust that in the case of this recipe most papayas will do the trick just fine.
This recipe is nice and simple! It makes an excellent dessert or sweet snack without being overly filling or obnoxiously sugary.
It’s so simple, in fact, that I’m just going to give the directions in the full recipe below instead of breaking it up like I usually do.
Full Recipe
Ingredients:
1 large papaya, seeds and skins discarded, cut into chunks (about 300g)
4 cups soy milk
3 tablespoons sugar, more or less to taste
Step 1:
In a medium sauce pan over medium-high heat, combine soy milk and chopped papaya. Stir frequently to prevent the milk from sticking to the bottom of the pan. If it feels like it’s sticking to the bottom of the pan, reduce the heat and stir more frequently. Heat until the papaya is cooked through, 10-15 minutes for firm papaya, less for riper papayas.
Step 2:
Transfer the milk and papayas to a blender and add the sugar. Blend until smooth. Strain through a fine sieve, using a spoon to stir and push it through the mesh, into a pitcher. Serve warm in mugs or tea cups.
